What is Vaping? A Comprehensive Guide

The vaping industry has received a lot of attention in recent years. Aside from the tremendous growth the industry has experienced, it has also sparked a huge discussion among health professionals and government agencies.

So what is “vaping?”

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the vapor produced by a vaporizer or an e-cigarette.

Great. So what does that mean?

A vaporizer is an electronic device (a mod, a pen) that is used to vaporize an e-liquid. Inside your device, an atomizer or cartomizer heats the e-liquid, transforming it into a vapor that the user inhales.



What is an “e-liquid?”

What’s in an E-Juice?

Propylene Glycol (PG) is an FDA-approved solvent, and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is a clear, odorless liquid produced from plant oils, typically palm, soy, or coconut oil. Both are used as a base for creating e-juices. These compounds are found in common household items and processed foods. PG is a viscous liquid that holds flavoring well. VG is a thicker liquid that produces clouds on the exhale.

Flavoring is added to create the delicious blends in e-juices. Ruthless e-juice uses top ingredients for its flavorings. Common types of flavors include fruity, creamy, menthol, and tobacco.

Lastly, e-juice may or may not contain nicotine. Nicotine levels vary, but standard levels are: 0MG (no nicotine), 3MG, and 6MG. Nicotine levels are displayed on each bottle, and preference varies from user to user.



Vaping vs. Smoking

The first thing to note is that unlike smoking cigarettes, vaping doesn’t involve combustion, and therefore doesn’t cause the same physical harms. Combustion leads to thousands of chemicals being inhaled, many of which are carcinogenic. Vaping, however, doesn’t do this.

According to a literature review by Dr. Dominic L. Palazzolo from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, “puff-for-puff, the amount of nicotine finding its way into the blood stream from vaping an e-cigarette has been shown to be less than what you would expect from smoking a conventional cigarette with comparable nicotine content.”

E-Cigarettes vs. Vape Mods

E-Cigarettes are small, often the size of a pen, and mimic the look of traditional cigarettes. These vape pens usually come with pre-filled cartridges. They are a great option for users that have recently quit smoking, as they provide a similar sensation to cigarettes and provide a similar throat hit. They’re also pretty reasonably priced.
